IS YOUR HOME FIRE SAFE?
TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO WALK THROUGH YOUR HOME AND USE THIS CHECKLIST TO MAKE SURE YOUR HOME IS FIRE SAFE.
Smoke Detectors Space Heaters
  Place smoke detectors near bedrooms and on every floor.   Use heaters only in well ventilated rooms.
  Test the batteries monthly.   Do not use heaters to dry clothing or other items.
  Keep smoke detectors away from air vents.   Place heaters where they cannot be knocked over easily.
  Place smoke detectors at least 4-6 inches away from walls and corners.   Keep heaters at least 36 inches away from all combustibles.
Electrical Wiring Safe Cooking Practices
  Replace wiring if it is frayed or cracked.   Keep appliances free of grease and crumbs.
  Do no place wiring under rugs, over nails, or in high traffic areas.   Do not leave a hot stove unattended.
  Avoid overloading outlets.   Keep combustibles away from the stove.
  Keep covers over electric plates and avoid exposed wiring.   Keep a fire extinguisher handy.
Electric Space Heaters Safe Smoking Habits
  Plug heater directly into wall socket and not into extension cords.   If you must smoke, never smoke in bed.
  Unplug heaters when they are not in use.   Keep ashtrays away from furniture and cushions.
  Always attend burning cigarettes.
Kerosene Heaters Children and Fire Safety
  Fill only with K-1 Kerosene. Never use gasoline or camp stove fuel.   Keep lighters and matches away from children.
  Place heater at least 36 inches from all combustibles.   Teach children how to call for help.
  Refuel kerosene heaters outdoors and only when they are cool.   Use safety plugs in electrical outlets.
Wood Stoves and Fire Places Home Fire Escape Plan
  Only use seasoned wood. Never burn green wood or trash.   Have an esape plan with 2 ways out of each room.
  Always use a protective screen.   Crawl low in smoke.
  Clean chimneys yearly.   Choose a meeting place outside of the house.
  Never go back into a burning building.
  Practice the plan twice each year.
  Know how to call for help.
Fire Extinguishers Fire Safety Technology
  Practice PASS   Consider installing a residential fire sprinkler system.
  P: Pull the pin.
  A: Aim at the base of the fire.
  S: Squeeze the trigger.
  S: Sweep from side to side.
